hypnotherapy FAQ
Many people equate hypnotherapy with either a Vegas show or some sort of mind control in which the hypnotized person has no awareness or control over what they’re doing or saying. Movies have done the most to perpetuate the myths and inaccurate portrayals of what hypnosis is. So, let’s take a few moments to dispel some of the myths and answer the most frequently asked questions about hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
Question: Will you have total control over me while I’m hypnotized?
Answer: No. You will be completely aware of what I’m saying and what you’re saying at all times. While in hypnosis, no one can make you do or say anything that goes against your morals, deeply held beliefs, character or convictions. You are always in control.
Question: Can I get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis?
Answer: No. It is literally impossible for anyone to get stuck in the hypnotic state. You can bring yourself out of hypnosis at any time. The next Q&A explains why you may not want to come out of hypnosis, though!
Question: What does being hypnotized feel like?
Answer: Being in the hypnotic state, also called “trance”, is amazing! It is the most complete state of relaxation you can be in without being asleep. It is so deeply relaxing that 10 minutes in trance is equivalent to one hour of sleep!
The hypnotic state is also completely natural; everyone experiences it at least twice a day – once, when first waking up in the morning and again at night, right before falling asleep.
Have you ever been so focused on something that you’re not really aware of what’s going on around you? Or, you “lose track of time” because you’ve been so absorbed in work, a TV show, reading a great book, etc? Those are all examples of being in trance.
Question: How does hypnosis work?
Answer: In a nutshell, hypnosis works by reprogramming incorrect perceptions. It does this by accessing the subconscious brain, where all memories, perceptions and feelings reside. It also runs the autonomic nervous system. To access the subconscious brain, you must be deeply relaxed. This allows the conscious brain, which analyzes, interprets and filters incoming ideas, to be bypassed. Once the conscious brain is relaxed, perceptions can be changed which, in turn, changes the related thoughts, feelings and behaviors that have been impacting your life.
Question: Does hypnosis have to be done in person?
Answer: No. Sessions can be conducted via Zoom. As long as you can hear my voice, have a comfortable and quiet space and I can see you to assess your level of relaxation and responses, in-person sessions are not required.
Question: How soon will I see results?
Answer: It depends on what you want to accomplish. In general, lasting change can be achieved in three to six sessions. However, you will begin to feel a difference after the first session.
